Japan ushers in plea bargains for white-collar crimes

Criminal suspects and defendants can now be treated more leniently in exchange for information on a wide range of economic offenses like bribery, tax evasion, collusion and manipulating financial documents, as well as organized-crime activities like drug trafficking. Unlike in the U.S., they cannot strike deals with prosecutors based on admissions of their own crimes, but rather only those of others.
